Sonia, a descendant of first-generation Italians ...

...who sought better prospects in Scotland in the 1950s, carries a unique blend of cultural heritage. Italian was her first language, and she learned English upon starting school.

Growing up as an Italian in the 1970s presented challenges, as Sonia navigated between two contrasting cultures and expectations. Despite these hurdles, she found resilience and a sense of belonging through art.

At 12, during a holiday to her mother's hometown in Tuscany, Sonia was captivated by the beauty and freedom she experienced.

It was during this time that she discovered drawing. Despite her inexperience it became something she enjoyed and a natural way to express herself.

Tragically, Sonia lost her mother shortly after this transformative trip, an event that deeply impacted her life and any artistic aspirations. Though she loved art as a child, societal expectations led her towards a more practical career path.

Nevertheless, Sonia's creativity shone through in her chosen field of hairdressing and makeup artistry, creating characters for film, television, and theatre with Scottish Opera. She excelled in her craft while seamlessly navigating motherhood, work, and education, becoming a hairdressing lecturer, and later establishing with her husband a salon and training business.

In 2017, an artistic calling became undeniable. Sonia returned to art, rediscovering the joy of creation. It was a period of self-discovery that ignited her curiosity and led her to explore various media, pushing her creative boundaries and continuing to refine her unique style. Her journey is a testament to her resilience and determination, from personal challenges to forging her own artistic identity.

In the process of creating and viewing art, barriers dissolve, fostering empathy and understanding.

At an intersection with a desire to create a visual narrative of life’s experiences through her art, Sonia invites viewers to explore themes of belonging, personal journey, and the transformative power of creativity. A shared reflection on the nature of one’s own sense of belonging.

Sonia believes that by sharing our stories through art, we can build bridges across divides, encouraging a more compassionate world.

"For my 18th Birthday I received a commissioned painting by Sonia painting from my parents. I must say that I have never received a gift able to create such emotion. The painting captures a core memory from my childhood, that I am now able to look at and be flooded with amazing memories. The detail and craftsmanship is impeccable, it is a gift I will keep with me as I progress through my life, reminding me of such a special time."
